Dion scores Top 10 finish in WSK Euro Series debut
The Ricky Flynn Motorsport driver showed front-running pace on his way to a personal best of 10th overall in the WSK Euro Series season opener.
Dion Gowda scored a personal-best Top 10 finish in the 2020 WSK Euro Series last weekend as the series finally got underway at Circuito Internazionale Napoli, kicking off the first of three rounds across Italy's finest kart circuits.
Despite his WSK rookie status against far more experienced rivals, Dion was able to assert himself as one to watch in 2020 with multiple Top 5 Heat race finishes and front-running pace across the weekend.
After a strong warm-up on Thursday morning placing third overall, the young Indian driver attacked Qualifying to achieve 11th of 51 entries with a time of 58.142s – the quickest of his Ricky Flynn Motorsport team mates in the OKJ class. This would place him 5th on the grid for what would be an eventful group of four Heat races across the coming days.
In Friday and Saturday's Heats 1 - 3, Dion, applied the same potential seen in earlier warm-up sessions to make solid progress in every race, and was duly rewarded with 4th place finishes across the board. Heat 3 was a particularly strong showing for the young driver, briefly leading the race in the opening melee before the field settled into the 10 laps around the Sarno circuit.
Heat 4 would mark the end of Dion's consistent run at the front of the field, but he powered back from an opening lap incident to salvage 8th on the road after running as low as 12th. This 'never give up' attitide was enough to secure a P5 grid slot for Sunday's Pre-Final A.
Starting from 5th, Pre-Final A proved to be the most eventful race yet with multiple incidents shuffling the order corner by corner. Caught in a few of these skirmishes, Dion crossed the finish line 7th to secure his place in the Final despite having not shown his full potential. A good result all things considered!
7th place meant a P14 start for the final race of the weekend, and Dion applied all of the experience gained from the ealier races to make immediate progress past the competitors ahead. Even with nine karts separating the two on the opening lap, Dion found himself crossing the line behind RFM team mate Josh Irfan in 10th place overall as the chequered flag fell.
Dion now travels to the Zuera International Circuit in Zaragoza, Spain for Round 2 of the RGMMC Champions of the Future event.
